Why Donate?

The Acadia Family Center (AFC) is a (501) (c) (3) non-profit outpatient treatment center for individuals and families struggling with the use of alcohol, drugs, other addictive substances, and/or a mental health disorder. Located in Southwest Harbor since 1988, AFC is the only agency on Mount Desert Island (MDI) licensed for the outpatient treatment of substance use disorders.

40 years ago, the Center originated as a non-profit organization devoted to informing communities in the MDI region about these disorders. We continue to provide prevention-education programs to students in our middle schools and regional high school, to clients and their families, and to the general public.

AFC benefits greatly from the generosity of our donors, and we recently completed a substantial addition to our Southwest Harbor center that will significantly enhance our ability to serve the community with: (1) new space for community events and presentations, group therapy, and 12-Step meetings; (2) dedicated space for our art therapy program; and (3) space for additional counselors.

Our services are provided independent of an individual’s ability to pay, and many of our clients cannot afford to do so. Thanks to the generosity and continued support of our donors, dedicated funds provide financial assistance to clients who cannot afford to pay for all of their treatment.

When individuals find their way into long-term recovery, we all benefit.
